Hobart Bush Fires of 1967

Saturday, January 25th, 2003

Everyone has been taking about how the Canberra bushfires are the worst ever in Australia but I just talked to my Dad who went through the Hobart Bush Fires in 1967 and he cleared up a few things. Did you realise that 1400 homes were destroyed in a matter of 5 hours and 62 people lost their lives ? I didn’t. I was born in 1968 1 year later. Let’s hope that the weather today doesn’t result in more loss of life and property.

BLOG Split

Saturday, January 25th, 2003

I’ve split my blog into two blogs because the subject matter is so different. See the link to my Java blog if you are looking for java or geek stuff.

HOT!

Saturday, January 25th, 2003

OK it’s hot today. I just checked my outside thermometer which sits on the roof outside my room and it was reading 58.5 degrees celsius (temperatures are usually measured in the shade).

Javablog Created !

Saturday, January 25th, 2003

I just crated this java related blog because I figure that a lot of the people who read my normal blog aren’t interested in Java stuff and vice versa. Check out the link to my other blog if you are looking for more general ramblings.

Java Pro Magazine - JAXB Revisited

JAXB is definitely cool. This article makes me want to go out and implement JAXB in our application now. Unfortunately I have to keep going with WebWork performance tuning.

JAXB Revisited

Resistance is Futile:

Thursday, January 23rd, 2003

One of my colleagues pointed out this article on JDO Central:

http://www.jdocentral.com/JDO_Commentary_DavidJordan_10.html

The question I have is when will someone write a good JDO mapping layer to one of the relational databases that performs well ? All of the benefits that David mentions in his article are very real but JDO won’t be adopted IMHO until it can perform well.

Database performance is one thing that gets a lot of attention in IT circles, just look at the salaries paid to DBA’s for Oracle and DB2. Is anyone writing an open source JDO implementation ?

spamgourmet - disposable email addresses, spam filtering

Wednesday, January 22nd, 2003

My brother sent me this:

Have you seen http://www.spamgourmet.com?

They provide you with a way to make disposable e-mail addresses. The first few messages (configurable up to 20) get forwarded to your real e-mail address. After that any e-mails get eaten. More options etc. Looks quite cool.
Definitely cool.

xReporter

Saw this on the server side:

xReporter overview

Looks like an interesting architecture but I think that the Jasper Reports Webwork combination still has it beat.

Open source competitive advantage

Wednesday, January 22nd, 2003

Random thoughts

Rickard makes a good point, companies that use open source have a competitive advantage. I just wish that there were better open source solutions to things such as object databases and rules engines.

More Canberra Bushfires

Tuesday, January 21st, 2003

Looks like the bushfire situation in Canberra is getting serious again today with 65 km/h winds forecast from the northwest and this time it’s North Canberra (Belconnen and Gungahlin) where my parents live that is under threat. Lets hope and pray that the events of Saturday won’t be repeated.
