Days of Blunder

Saturday, February 21st, 2004

Just got back from princess CB’s house where myself and the royal court consumed a huge amount of food in an indoor picnic because we couldn’t be bothered to go to the park. Afterwards we somehow ended up watching Days of Thunder because we couldn’t decide on anything else. Now don’t get me wrong, I have fond memories of this movie. Somehow the mists of time have dimmed my recollection. When that happens it is best to let it be and not to revisit your recollections with more maturity and perspective. The plot, the acting, the dialog, the MUSIC puhleeze!!!! (as Queen S would say).

Life is like that sometimes. We heark back to an earlier time when we remember things as being good. Sometimes they were, sometimes we have selectively forgotten the bad and boring bits. What we don’t realize is that we have moved on and those earlier times are gone for good. Sometimes the memories just have to suffice and we need to move on to today’s experiences.

Activity is the goods for true satisfaction

Friday, February 20th, 2004

Ross Gittins over at the Sydney Morning Herald has this piece about how we get more satisfaction about doing things than buying stuff. This means that gadgets are out and ski holidays are in :-)

Researchers say they can predict divorces

Friday, February 20th, 2004

Researchers say they can predict divorces or so says the boston globe. Apparently they do it by videoing couples discussing contentious issues and logging the number of positive versus negative interactions. If the negative outnumbers the positive by 5 to 1 or more then the couple is likely to divorce. I’m gonna file this one away for when I get married, how hard can it be to be positive more than 1 in 5 times ?

The Album Preparation Commences

Thursday, February 19th, 2004

We had our first rehearsal for our church live album recording tonight. Duncan wrote some awesome choir arrangements for some of the songs. I must say that he is a great musician and a good teacher. Now all we have to do is remember all of those awesome arrangements. Some sheet music would help but since Duncan only finished them this morning I guess we will need to wait a while.

JFunc: JUnit Functional Testing

Thursday, February 19th, 2004

I’ve been having a look at JFunc to help with some interface testing at work. There’s not a lot of documentation but all in all there are some worthy enhancements to JUnit.

Well It’s Certainly Different

Monday, February 16th, 2004

Today I was looking at some software at work trying to figure out how it worked. It is a Java Web Start application designed to talk to a database via servlets. So far so good, a good move away from their VB client server app. Then I try and figure out how their client works because users are complaining about slow load times. To my surprise I discover that there is no GUI code, hmmmm, time to read the docs and figure this out. Hang on a sec, they have relational database tables defining the GUI layout !!!!!!!!!. They must be building the screens on the fly every time and transferring all the data for the field layouts every time the app loads. Great for configurability but really, how often does the GUI layout change ? Wouldn’t it be better to create classes via a code generator from the database, compile them and then let Java Web Start cache them properly ? As I said in the title, it’s certainly different.

Presence of God

Sunday, February 15th, 2004

Awesome presence of God during worship at church this morning. Despite the heat the choir was actually jumping during the praise set :) . We had a lot of fun. Should be good tonight too. Paradise Hotel for lunch afterwards had refrigerated air conditioning so we stayed all afternoon. Still over 31 degrees inside my place.

HOT!!!!!

Saturday, February 14th, 2004

Although it was hot today according to the Bureau of Meteorology’s Kent Town Daily Weather Summary it is too hot NOW!!!. It is 31.4 degrees C inside and 34.2 degrees outside according to my trusty inside outside thermometer. So what do you do when it’s too hot to sleep ? Write irrelevant BLOG entries of course. I think it should be illegal for landlords in Adelaide to rent properties woithout air conditioning.

I spoke at Thirty Something tonight where I shared some of the more memorable moments in my Christian life. The main point that people seemed to relate to is that I was able to say that I have had many of the advantages in life (family, money, education etc) but I still need Jesus just as badly as everyone else. Lots of people came up afterwards and said congratulations so I guess I must of done an OK job.
