The antidote to driving the best cars to nowhere

Everything I Needed to Know in Life I Learned from Star Trek

Well not really. The Bible is a complete source of everything I need, but it amazes me the number of people who dismiss Star Trek as merely a fantasy. Tonight at Church we heard Sy Rogers give his take on popular culture and in particular the way that a lot of movies at the moment are picking up on Christian themes. His opinion was that this was a form of pre-evangelism, not the gospel but an introduction to gospel themes which softens peoples hearts to the real message. An interesting idea.

When I got home I happened to be watching a Star Trek: The Next Generation episode from season 6, The Rightful Heir, which really explores a number of issues relating to the second coming of Christ. There are a number of other episodes I have seen that deal with a number of other interesting issues including homosexuality, aging, the sanctity of life and even workplace relationships. Sure there are other episodes as well but I think that there are enough issues sprinkled in there to make ST:TNG of interest to a wider circle than you might think.

So the next time you are over at my place and I suggest we watch a Star Trek episode, don’t turn your nose up in disgust, it might be more interesting and thought provoking than you think.
