Episodes in Order - How Hard Can it Be?

Wednesday, July 26th, 2006

Why is it so hard to get TV episodes in order for Australian TV networks? Surely they come in video cassettes or some such with little numbers on them? 11 comes after 10 and all that? It’s annoying enough with House which at least has the same characters all the way through but when it comes to NCIS where one of the characters died in an earlier episode but keeps popping up due to the ineptitude of channel 10 to get the tapes in order it is beyond a joke. Can’t they employ even a work experience student that can actually count for goodness sake?

The Amazing Race vs Boundaries

Friday, February 4th, 2005

Recently I’ve been re-reading Boundaries Before Marriage in order to get it all through my head again. At the same time I’ve been watching The Amazing Race warning spoilers!and you’d be surprised how the two things complement each other. The Amazing race pits couples, or friends in teams of two, against each other in some exotic locations. Along the way there is heaps of pressure and inevitably someone in the couple will make a mistake. I look upon all of this as a sort of case study in working out conflict when relating as a couple.

I already think I can see some couples whose relationship will not survive the series and some that I’m dubious about. I think my least favorite is Jonathon who is so disrespectful of Victoria that it is a clear case of chapter 15 in boundaries. Then Adam’s girlfriend threatens to leave him and his reaction is to threaten to throw himself on the railway tracks. After that he changes briefly and she lets him get away with it. GET A GRIP GIRL AND SET SOME BOUNDARIES! Man this show has so many relational case studies.

Geek Heaven

Oh Man I love these guys! They get to do the coolest stuff! I’ve only caught the first two episodes on SBS so far but last week they tried to re-enact the famous rocket car myth by strapping some hobby rockets on top of a car and setting them off. This week they got cans of biscuit dough and heated them up in a car to see if they would explode (they did). This sort of stuff is what every geek dreams about but very few have the drive or the expertise to do. On top of all that they have impressive facial hair.
Required viewing I think.

Everything I Needed to Know in Life I Learned from Star Trek

Sunday, May 23rd, 2004

Well not really. The Bible is a complete source of everything I need, but it amazes me the number of people who dismiss Star Trek as merely a fantasy. Tonight at Church we heard Sy Rogers give his take on popular culture and in particular the way that a lot of movies at the moment are picking up on Christian themes. His opinion was that this was a form of pre-evangelism, not the gospel but an introduction to gospel themes which softens peoples hearts to the real message. An interesting idea.

When I got home I happened to be watching a Star Trek: The Next Generation episode from season 6, The Rightful Heir, which really explores a number of issues relating to the second coming of Christ. There are a number of other episodes I have seen that deal with a number of other interesting issues including homosexuality, aging, the sanctity of life and even workplace relationships. Sure there are other episodes as well but I think that there are enough issues sprinkled in there to make ST:TNG of interest to a wider circle than you might think.

So the next time you are over at my place and I suggest we watch a Star Trek episode, don’t turn your nose up in disgust, it might be more interesting and thought provoking than you think.

Blakes 7!

Saturday, March 6th, 2004

Wow I’m so excited. I got home last night and in the letterbox was one of those little red & white cards, you know, the ones Australia Post leaves when they can’t fit something in your letterbox. This could only mean one thing…

BLAKE’S 7 DVD’S !

So what if it was made in 1978, so what if the sets sometimes look lower budget than Doctor Who, so what if the whole thing was recorded in mono, Blake’s 7 is Awesome.

I was so excited that I had to open up the package and watch the first episode before going over to Princess CB’s house for death by dessert (which made me late, but not by much).

What I was impressed by was the quality of the menus. The Liberator flies through serenely, Servalan turns arrogantly in her chair, very nice. It was also good to see all the scenes they deleted from the first episode when they produced the compilation video which was all I managed to buy before they discontinued them.

Mmmm, many more hours of entertainment to look forward to.

Australian Idol

Just a reminder to anyone who hasn’t voted to SMS the word GUY to 1889966 (Australians only I’m afraid) about 50 times before tomorrow and then be watching tomorrow night.

Give em the Bible Guy!

Friday, September 26th, 2003

I was watching Australian Idol last night and was struck by a comment that one of the evicted contestants made that Guy had given them his bible. Way to go Guy !
